About Me

Welcome to the website of award-winning Welsh pianist Luke Jones. Luke has performed recitals and concertos throughout the UK, Europe and Asia. His playing has been heard in concert halls such as Bridgewater Hall - Manchester; Symphony Hall - Birmingham; St. David's Hall - Cardiff; Palau de la musica Catalana - Barcelona and more. He has also performed with major orchestras such as the CBSO, Manchester Camerata, Orchestra of the Swan and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Franz Liszt - Sonata in B minor, S.178 played by Luke Jones

This is my performance of the monumental Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt. This is a truly special work, arguably the pinnacle of piano writing in the 19th Century. From my point of view as a performer this work represents climbing Parnassus, a work of olympian proportions. The piece encompasses a vast array of moods and contrasts, and develops itself on microcosmic and macrocosmic proportions. Akin to Epic poetry, the work is a sustained single-movement narrative and contained within the beginning is the ending. We come full circle though not without catharsis. What begins as a dark, foreboding message eventually transforms into one of joy, triumph and serenity. Recorded live at RNCM Concert Hall, 31st May 2021. (Wikipedia: The Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 is generally thought to have been composed in 1800, although the year of its composition has been questioned by some contemporary musicologists. It was first performed on 5 April 1803, with the composer as soloist. During that same performance, the Second Symphony and the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives were also premiered. The composition was published in 1804, and was dedicated to Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia. The first primary theme is reminiscent of that of Mozart's 24th Piano Concerto. )
